'Swamp People' star Mitchell Guist dies after boat fall

One of the stars of History Channel's show Swamp People died yesterday. Mitchell Guist -- who starred on the show with brother Glenn -- was pronounced dead at a Louisiana hospital today, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack tells AP. Guist would have turned 48 on Friday. He was loading something onto his boat when he slipped and fell around 9 a.m. on the Intracoastal Waterway, near Pierre Part, La. (about 90 minutes from New Orleans), according to WAFB. The sheriff says it appeared he had some sort of seizure, but it is uncertain if the seizure was caused from the fall. An autopsy will have to be performed before an official cause of death can be announced.

The tickets were a Christmas gift to the teen, who idolizes the country powerhouse. But during their two hour drive to the show, a man who'd passed out at the wheel slammed into them. AGT: Is AMERICA Ready For HOWARD STERN To Go PRIME TIME?!
Monday 05-14-2012 11:09am ET

:: nbc universal ::

IS AMERICA READY???

Ready or not, Summertime television is about to get RED HOT as HOWARD STERN takes over for Piers Morgan as a judge on America's Got Talent. He debuts MONDAY NIGHT and has been on an all out media blitz over the last week, appearing everywhere from JIMMY FALLON to different daytime talk shows... Piers Morgan and more!

STERN - who raises eyebrows for his long history as a radio shock jock, has reinvented himself on Sattelite Radio. Free from restrictions due to finicky radio ratings systems and rules from the FCC, what was already an amazing live radio show has evolved into a content juggernaut, and, his skills as an interviewer have become legendary.

Stern's candid conversations with LADY GAGA, BILLY JOEL and most recently SACHA BARON COHEN - whom STERN interveiwed OUT of character, have made headlines for what they've revealed.

Now, STERN is poised to take over prime time, a move which could catapault him to a place in the pop culture stratosphere somewhere above Ryan Seacrest yet just below President Obama... but not "A" list... it will be his own place on his own list.

Stern's success could also mean big dividends for his day job, hosting his morning show on SIRIUS XM's HOWARD 100 channel. Stern, who programs both channels 100 and 101 on the satcaster, has been at odds with the company he'll call home for another four years at least, over pay, contractual issues and more. If the success of the show makes people flock to the Satcaster in the form of new subscribers, it could mean a massive payday for the somewhat struggling company he calls home... and for Stern, himself.

Is this all setting up STERN for a return to terrestrial radio in some form or fashion? A STERN talk show on NBC via FREEMANTLE MEDIA and SYCO, Simon Cowell's content company?

Who knows what could be in the cards. What is known is that Monday night on NBC, the KING OF ALL MEDIA will make history again... and could give the PEACOCK NETWORK the biggest ratings ever seen on AMERICA'S GOT TALENT. Monday night on NBC.

The show debuts at 8p/7 central. Check local listings.

Teacher makes students wear cone of shame pet collars
Monday 05-14-2012 11:07am ET

A school teacher is in trouble for putting a cone intended for pets around her students' necks.

Called Elizabethan collars, they are meant to be put around the heads of dogs and cats to keep them from chewing on themselves after they have surgery.

According to a school district investigation, Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp -- a science teacher at Zephyrhills High School -- last month put a cone on at least eight students.

The whole idea came from the movie Disney-Pixar movie Up, which she showed in her classroom twice. In that film, a dog wears "the cone of shame" as a form of punishment.

In a letter recommending that Bailey-Cutkomp be fired, Superintendent Heather Fiorentino writes, "Ms. Bailey-Cutkomp, your actions show extremely poor judgment and concern me for several reasons. I am stunned that you would put dog collars on students for any reason.

"I am very concerned that you used this collar to punish and embarrass students in front of their peers."

But there's mixed reaction from students and parents about this. 10 News spoke with a student who actually wore the collar. She says it was all a joke, and she feels terrible that this teacher might be fired.

Bailey-Cutkomp has asked for a hearing before the school board.
